About 6 months ago I sat up in bed. I saw it....the booth. The Southern Bridal Faire booth. The bridal show that was over 26 weeks away. Sounds silly, huh? This is how my crazy mind works sometimes and there's no stopping it! I had to get up and find my sketch pad! This is what I drew:
I knew it had to be white, it had to have glass or acrylic elements, cool lighting was a must, yummy food a no brainer, and something would be hung with fishing line. I couldn't wait to tell Leah or could I? We are both VERY opinionated and HONEST, especially when it comes to events and décor. So, if I am SOLD on something telling her for the first time can bring on a little anxiety. Will she like it or will I get that crinkled up nose look that says “I don't think so”? BUT, HALLELUJAH she loved it and our brainstorming started flowing! This is when we're in our prime our element. It's a pure adrenaline rush....creativity is flying, ideas are bouncing, the room is buzzing! We are on top of the world and when we're done we couldn't tell you whose idea was whose we just know it's GOOD!
Fast forward about 150 days, I sat down to finalize the design and the plan. I jotted down some notes and went to meet Leah for dinner. The show was getting closer and I was excited....UNTIL I got the crinkle...UH OH! The idea of floating shelves, food on top, and a crowd wasn't settling to well with Leah. She is the practical one, the reasonable one. I am more of a “who cares what it takes I wanna do it” type person (one of the hundred reasons we make such a great team). I decided not to continue the discussion and came home with my tail between my legs. AND IN STEPS THE HUBS! I explained the booth to him, Leah's (legitimate) concerns, and showed him the sketches. To his demise (LOL), he sweetly said “we can do that”! (GOD LOVE HIM!)
Our next get together was MUCH better! One thing Leah knows is that I am just as hard headed as she is and sometimes you have to “go with my flow”. AND thank goodness she did! This meeting of the minds birthed her idea for what turned out to be our favorite element. The floral chandelier.....GORGEOUS!
So, it's 2 days before the show and everything is all falling into place. All of our pieces are here except for ONE thing.......the “star of the show”. The silver sequin tablecloth we decided to splurge on and rented from La Tavola in California. At 5:00 pm on the Friday before the show, I tracked the shipping for the hundredth time that day and the status changed from “delivery today” to “later delivery”. WHAT? I freaked!!! I called the shipping company and well don't get me started! So, I called the rental company. They were ON IT! I must commend them on their awesome customer service! They immediately packaged another linen and sent it overnight to be delivered on Saturday....crisis overted! Or so I thought! Twenty four hours later, at 5pm on Saturday, we learned we would NOT be getting either package (maybe the only draw back to living in the sticks)! What in the WORLD were we going to do?! We did what any cool designer would do......we scoured Montgomery and ended up buying a duvet cover. Yes, you read that correctly! A purple bedspread stood in place of our “star of the show” linen. And, I have to admit I may have liked it better. The color and texture was PERFECT!
(LEFT) Thanks to Mr. Frank and my AMAZING hubby for building the floating shelves. The final product was BETTER than I even imagined! They were hung by fishing line and made with cut acrylic. Each one held 4 types of mini foods on a stick; homemade ham and cheddar biscuits, hushpuppy patties with cajun shrimp, candied sweet potatoes with fried chicken bites, and fried cornbread with smoked turkey breast.
(RIGHT) This FABULOUS Ikea bookcase served as the perfect piece for our drink and dessert station. The drink was Lavender Lemonade. The desserts included cheesecake bites, mini apple tarts, and bite size chocolate meringue and lemon pies. All of them homemade, of course.
Food thanks: Craigie for making the AMAZING cheesecake bites, JL for the RIDICULOUS smoked turkey, my precious mama Debbie Debbie, and the staff of Red's Little School House for cooking and plating the rest of this yummy food. There is no way I could say which item was my favorite. It was all delicious and all a HUGE HIT!
Many, long hours of planning, building, painting, flowering, cooking, and gathering went into our 10x10 slice of heaven but we think it paid off! We didn't want to take it down! It was everything we had envisioned complete with lots of white, glass elements, cool lighting, yummy food, and plenty of fishing line.
